'Game on': Legal experts react to bombshell Supreme Court ruling in Trump tax case

In a major blow to Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for prosecutors in New York City to receive the former president's tax returns.Nearly immediately, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said simply that the work goes on.

He wasn't the only legal expert to weigh in on the ruling from the High Court. Impeachment legal adviser Norm Eisen noted that the decision will kick the case "into high gear." Thus far, the Supreme Court has held back on the Trump-related suit until after the campaign and after Trump was out of office.

"Some are greeting the outcome of the impeachment trial with dismay, and as three people who have spent the last four years fighting Trumpism in courts of law and in the court of public opinion, we might be expected to be among them," wrote Eisen for CNN.com. "But far from it, we see the trial as a positive first step in what we predict will be a far-reaching campaign to secure criminal, civil and regulatory accountability against Trump and his enablers for their undeniable misconduct over the last four years."

The grand jury will see the documents "almost immediately," said NBC News reporter Pete Williams.
