Trump thinks he's winning the shutdown fight -- after a questionable survey by GOP pollsters

After the longest government shutdown in American history, President Donald Trump's team thinks that the shutdown did not hurt the president's popularity or his chances of reelection in 2020.

Trump is scheduled to be briefed on a new poll number commissioned by his campaign manager Brad Parscale on Monday evening, according to POLITICO.

The poll was conducted by GOP pollsters Neil Newhouse and Robert Blizzard.

"The poll, taken in 10 GOP-leaning House districts that Democrats won in the 2018 midterms, found that a plurality of voters blamed Trump for the shutdown. But a plurality of voters also supported his push for a border wall," the report said.

This poll is in conflict with multiple reports that say Trump's approval decreased after the five-week shutdown.

"While some view internal polls skeptically, this one could embolden Trump to take a hard line in future negotiations over the wall," the report said. "Trump has a pattern of latching onto polling data that confirm his views, even if they’re contradicted by other numbers."

Other polls said that most Trump voters did not think the border wall promise was worth the shutdown. ABC News/Washington Post released a poll that said 58 percent disapprove of Trump's fight for a wall.

A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll said, "57 percent — disapprove of Trump's job performance, compared to the 40 percent that approves."

It also found that 54 percent of voters blamed "Trump and Republicans for the government shutdown."

According to a CBS poll, seven in 10 voters said a border wall was not worth the shutdown. An Associated Press/NORC poll said that "60 percent held Trump responsible for the shutdown."
