Former Vice President Mike Pence's Homeland Security adviser Olivia Troye told the co-hosts of "The View" that, behind closed doors, Donald Trump trashes his own people.
Speaking about Trump's MAGA loyalists, co-host Sunny Hostin cited this week's Morning Consult poll that has his numbers at 61 percent in the Republican Primary.
"Why do you think so many people still have this blind loyalty to him? What does that say about the party now?" Hostin asked Troye.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Well, I think it speaks to an unfortunate state of the Republican Party," Troye lamented. "It is certainly not the party that I want it to be and not the party that I believe it has been in the past. I think he has done a great job of sort of marketing himself as the champion for all of these people who are behind him in this movement. But, like, we've sat in these meetings. What is so frustrating and angering to me is he has nothing in common with any of his supporters and I detest the way he speaks about them."
She said that in meetings behind closed doors, the ex-president would trash or mock those who give him money, buy his products and cast their ballots for him.
"It was so disparaging to them," Troye continued. "I think about my own family members who, by the way, are very unhappy with me. I have a lot of family members who are still Trump supporters, and they're very upset that I'm a Trump critic, I think about them and I'm like, I hate the way you speak about them sometimes behind closed doors."
"They must be used to it from their families," Joy Behar joked. But speaking more seriously, she asked: "Would he invite any of these Trump supporters to Mar-a-Lago is what I'd like to know?"
Trump has also been caught mocking his evangelical Christian followers. In a 2020 report from The Atlantic, White House aides revealed Trump spoke "with cynicism and contempt about believers."
Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen revealed that Trump would celebrate what he called an evangelical "scam," with pastors that were "full of s--t."
“They’re all hustlers,” Trump said, according to Cohen.
