Trump's trial will 'turn off' Christian voters regardless of verdict: ex-GOP lawmaker

Guilty or innocent — the damage done to the Don when he appears for the first time as a defendant in a Lower Manhattan criminal court on Monday will purportedly hurt his standing with a key part of his MAGA base: the evangelicals.

Former Colorado congressman Ken Buck made clear that former President Donald Trump could be badly bruised once trial gets going and unsavory details go public in the case accusing him of fudging his business records to block from public view payments to prevent alleged affairs with porn star Stormy Daniels and ex-Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal from going public weeks before the 2016 election.

"The key to me is the essence of this case has to do with Donald Trump having an extramarital affair; they are paying a woman to have that affair and then paying that woman to not talk about the affair during the campaign for president in 2016," the now-citizen Buck said during an appearance on CNN.

It's in these sordid details of Trump's suspected philandering and his efforts behind-the-scenes that could get a swath of his faithful diehards to bristle.

"That will turn off a lot of Republican evangelical, Christian voters" Buck said. "And I think they will be hard-pressed to support this president, regardless of whether he is convicted or not convicted."

He added: "It's important to remind folks of the essence of this case and where it began."

Trump's criminal case stems from a $130,000 payment that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says the ex-president paid to Daniels for her silence and $150,000 that was paid by the National Enquirer parent company AMI to McDougal to bury stories that she also engaged in a sexual relationship with him.
