President Donald Trump insisted that his speech to the United Nations General Assembly was "very well received" — even as aghast critics called it "sheer lunacy" and "bonkers"
In a Truth Social post following the nearly hour-long rambling Tuesday speech, Trump referred to the event as "a great honor."
"I believe the speech was very well received," he asserted, noting the focus on immigration and energy. "I hope everybody gets to watch it!"
"The teleprompter was broken and the escalator came to a sudden hault [sic] as we were ridding [sic] up to the podium, but both of those events probably made the speech more interesting than it would have been otherwise," he added. "It is always an honor to speak at the United Nations, even if, their equipment is somewhat faulty."
Viewers, experts and diplomats alike reacted to the speech with shock, while UN attendees sat largely in silence for the 55 minutes that Trump spoke.
