President Donald Trump plans to travel to the Southwest border Thursday.
According to TheNew York Times, the president also wants to address the nation Tuesday—interrupting prime time programming—to directly make his case for a border wall ahead of his visit.
White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced the president's plan on Twitter.
Trump announced via Twitter that he would address the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET -- but it is unclear if TV networks will carry it live.
The government shutdown over funding for the wall entered its 16th day Monday. About 800,000 federal workers are not getting paid as the shutdown continues with no end in sight.
