Key Trump trial witness worries ex-president would sell national secrets 'behind bars'

Former President Donald Trump is the first president in American history to be convicted of a felony — and the next step is for Judge Juan Merchan to sentence him, which could range from probation and fines to prison. But one surprising person thinks prison might not be the best option: Michael Cohen, the estranged Trump attorney who served as the prosecution's star witness.

That's because, in Cohen's reckoning, Trump could barter national secrets to other inmates to live more comfortably behind bars.

"What do you think he's feeling right now?" asked anchor Nicolle Wallace.

"I think he's incredibly unnerved, he's not 100 percent sure what's actually going on, and that's the part that's really scaring him the most," said Cohen. "Nobody's telling him the truth. So, Donald, if you're watching, here's the truth. The truth is, you're in trouble."

"Now, whether or not you end up doing any time behind bars, you've heard me say this before, which is I would prefer you not to be," said Cohen. "And not because you don't deserve it, but rather because you possess secrets, you possess national security information that puts the rest of us at risk. And I don't trust you with that information behind bars, believing that you would sell that information for a bag of tuna or a book of stamps. And that's my biggest concern."

For that reason, he added, "A home confinement scenario would be just fine ... and I believe that judge — the judge is even-keeled, respectful of the process, something Donald Trump is not. I believe that he will make the right decision, and the right decision will be not just for Donald, but for respect to the office of the presidency."
