Jay Town, the former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama who was nominated for that job by Donald Trump in 2017, does not think the former president is doing himself any favors.
In a post on Twitter, Town took Trump to task for his latest claim that he wasn't really waving around top-secret Iran war plans to guests at his Bedminster resort but was actually waving around plans for a new golf course.
Town described this new ploy by Trump as "the least plausible yet" and said it would likely be ripped apart by prosecutors during a trial.
"It’s contrived out of whole cloth... and it’s obviously untrue," he wrote. "The people who were in the room won’t tell this lie on the stand."

Town said that the former president's latest effort to concoct on-the-fly legal defenses means that "at some point, Trump’s lawyers either need to quit or demand he stop talking."
Trump currently faces a slew of legal problems, including a civil lawsuit over allegedly fraudulent business practices from New York Attorney General Letitia James; criminal charges related to his hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels; criminal charges into his retention of top-secret documents at Mar-a-Lago; and two different investigations into his efforts to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.
Trump was also recently found liable for sexually abusing and defaming journalist E. Jean Carroll.
