WATCH: Trump is traveling to the western US this week -- but not for the reasons you think

President Donald Trump is set to campaign out West in the coming weeks. However, on his scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, there weren't any events listed. MSNBC host Ali Velshi suggested that Trump's presence in the Midwest might hinder Republican's campaigns more than helping them.

"Later this week the president heads West for another set of his Make America Great Again rallies, but is the Midwest causing concern among Republicans, in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan?" Velshi said on Tuesday.

Velshi said that Trump is "falling flat" in these stats. "What are Republicans telling you about this?" Velshi asked his guest Michael Scherer.

Scherer, a national political reporter for The Washington Post said that Trump cannot impart his "popularity" on some members of the Republican Party.

"That's not something a little enthusiasm from President Trump can make up. What makes these numbers remarkable is that in these states President Trump squeaked by in 2016. [We] talk to pollsters in the state and there are a couple things happening," Sheerer said.

He added, "First is Trump is not on the ballot like we saw in 2010, in 2014 with Barack Obama. It doesn't work that the president is able to impart his own popularity to members of his own party. And the second reason is in the same states Trump is actually pretty unpopular."
