'Turning against Trump’: Sunbelt voters are leaving the president in droves -- here's why

In a new report, the New York Times examines Democratic strategy ahead of the 2020 election, and the mood is upbeat for many Democrats, who say not only is the midwest back in play, but so are Sun Belt states such as Texas, Arizona and Florida.

The Times quotes Julián Castro, a former federal housing secretary who is running for the Democratic nomination, as especially bullish on Democratic chances next year, thanks to Trump failures.

“The Sun Belt is clearly turning against him,” Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, said of Trump in the Times story.

“I do think [Democratic] candidates can connect with growing, diverse states like Arizona, Texas, Florida and Georgia," Castro continued.

The Times also quotes Gov. Tony Evers of Wisconsin in the new piece. Evers tells the newspaper that: “I think Wisconsin is very winnable [for Democrats]....but it has to be someone that speaks to the issues but also is viewed as rational.’’

When the Times asked Evers if the Upper Midwest represented Democrats’ fastest route back to the White House, he answered simply, "hell yes."
