TV exec explains trap Trump set with his demand for prime time address coverage

On Monday, President Donald Trump's press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that the president was heading to the Southwest border this week.

Trump has also asked the television networks to interrupt prime-time Tuesday for the president to make his case about a wall.

The request put the networks in an odd position. Are they required to give equal time to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? Why even interrupt prime time programming for what is likely to be a presidential fact-free screed?

An anonymous executive told media reporter Brian Stelter the conundrum they face.

"TV exec texts: "He calls us fake news all the time, but needs access to airwaves…" Stelter tweeted.

"If we give him the time, he'll deliver a fact-free screed without rebuttal. And if we don't give him the time, he'll call every network partisan. So we are damned if we do and damned if we don't."
