Twitter cheers as hetero Nevada high-schooler publicly asks his gay best friend to prom

A pair of high-school friends in Las Vegas are garnering attention online over sharing their unusual -- and heartfelt -- prom "proposal," NewNowNext reported.

Jacob Lescenski publicly asked his best friend, Andrew Martinez, to go to their school prom on Tuesday after enlisting two friends to help him with a banner reading, "You're hella gay, I'm hella str8, but you're like my brother so be my d8!" and hold it up to surprise Martinez following their lunch period at Desert Oasis High.

"I decided on going to prom alone because my original date idea didn't work out so well," Lescenski said of the public gesture. "Then one night I saw Anthony, who is my best friend, tweeting about wanting a date. I then thought about how amazing of a guy he is and that he deserved a date."

Martinez, a member of the student council, had mentioned that, despite helping plan several school dances, he had never been asked to one.

"I just always wanted a date," Martinez said. "But I knew being gay, and knowing I'm too busy for guys, no gay guy would ask me to a dance, let alone prom."

Martinez quickly posted a picture of himself and Lescenski alongside the sign. The image, which has been shared just over 1,000 times on Twitter, can be seen below:

According to the New Civil Rights Movement, the two friends have been getting a positive reaction online:

Mic.com's Kevin O'Keeffe also praised the pair, saying that while their date may be platonic, the occasion is still "exciting."

"Those LGBTQ people who remember a much harsher high school can understand how heartwarming this promposal is to see," O'Keeffe wrote. "We can only hope their prom night will be as memorable."
