Two Georgia cops charged with murder for Tasering to death handcuffed black man who refused to walk

Two former Georgia police officers were indicted this week for the 2014 murder of a man who was Tasered to death while handcuffed.

Records showed that East Point Sgt. Marcus Eberhart and Officer Howard Weems fired their Tasers 13 times at Gregory Towns because he refused to get up and walk after being handcuffed during a 2014 arrest. Towns had told reportedly told the officers that he was too tired to walk after a foot chase.

Attorney Chris Stewart said at the time that the officers had broken department rules by using their Tasers "as a cattle prod on Mr. Towns."

An autopsy later revealed that shocks from the Taser combined with heart disease contributed to Towns' death.

WSB-TV's Mark Winne reported on Tuesday that the former officers were facing seven charges, including manslaughter and murder.

In their defense, the Police Benevolent Association had said that the officers' actions did not lead to Towns' death.
