Veteran who survived sex assault says Trump's military rape comments show 'he can't be trusted'

A veteran who survived sexual assault blasted Donald Trump as unfit to serve as commander-in-chief for his comments about rape among military service members.

Donald Trump declined an opportunity during Wednesday's foreign policy discussion to back away from his claim that sexual assault was an unavoidable consequence of allowing men and women to serve together in the U.S. military.

That's simply not acceptable, said Crystal, a former service member who was raped, in a new ad produced by MoveOn.org.

"Him saying that we just need to expect that sexual assault is going to happen -- why should we expect that?" Crystal said. "Why should I expect when I'm going to work and doing my job that I might be victimized, and it's just a Tuesday? I should not have to have that fear inside of me when I'm just trying to serve my country and do my duty as a service member?"

She said women service members should not fear sexual assault simply for serving alongside men -- who she said Trump had insulted by suggesting they could not control themselves around female troops.

"You're contributing to what this ideology of what rape culture is, is that women are 'asking for it' by us merely being present in a space where males are as well," Crystal said.

"As a woman who served our nation, know that Donald Trump can't be trusted to properly handle military service members, as well as victims of sexual assault and trauma," she added.
