Walmart greeter couldn't afford to buy car on her salary — so her Oklahoma town bought one for her

Walmart is notorious for it's low pay along with it's low prices. The retail giant has also begun offering a loan shark program for workers who are forced to use a payday lending service. That is, when they're not firing all of their workers in an attempt to test full automation.

Walmart greeter Yolanda Crawford didn't have a car, and was forced to walk every day to her Muskogee, Oklahoma Walmart branch. Whether snow, sleet, tornadoes or blistering Oklahoma heat, Crawford heads out on foot to get to work, where KJRH reported, she spreads joy to the community.

When the town learned that she walked to work, despite a 26.4 degree wind chill, they sprung into action. In just two weeks, the town's residents and an anonymous donor helped made sure Crawford had some wheels.

“We put brand new tires on the vehicle, we’re paying for tag and title for her, and six months of insurance for her," neighbor Scott Yandell said.

“I’m very excited because I never thought this would ever happen for me and it did,” Crawford told KJRH, which described her as having an "infectious spirit."

Helping her was an easy decision for many, but dozens also braved the freezing temperatures to surprise her with the gift.

“Everyone is just rooting for her and everyone loves her,” Chadwell said.

Yandell agreed, saying that there was no better way to celebrate Christmas than by giving someone something they desperately needed.

“The community loves me and they appreciate me for saying 'welcome to Walmart' to them as they come in and out of Walmart and I appreciate them as well,” said Crawford.
