WATCH: CNN's Jake Tapper throws shade at Trump advisor who told the media to ‘keep its mouth shut’

CNN’s Jake Tapper was not having any of the news that a top White House advisor demanded the media "keep its mouth shut" in the wake of Trump's election, subtly referencing the quote on two separate occasions during Thursday’s broadcast.

In an interview published Thursday, White House chief strategist Steve Bannon berated "the media," telling the New York Times that journalists "should be embarrassed and humiliated" by the results of the 2016 election.

“I want you to quote this,” Bannon—the former executive chair of the news and media company Breitbart News—told the New York Times. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country," he added.

In his rant to the Times, the senior counselor to the president specifically targeted members of “the elite media,” insisting their inability to predict Trump’s win is “a humiliating defeat that they will never wash away.”

Midway through his eponymous show “The Lead” on Thursday, CNN's Tapper addressed Bannon’s comments in a subtle rebuke of the advisor's remarks: “A reminder that the president’s top aide just told the New York Times that the press should keep its mouth shut,” Tapper said, laughing.

“No," he added.

At the end of the broadcast, the host once again addressed the comments:

“That’s it for the Lead, I’ll turn you over to Wolf Blitzer in the 'Situation Room,'” Tapper said, signing off from his show. “He also is not going to keep his mouth shut.”
