WATCH: Trump address the nation and try to make the case for his border wall

President Donald Trump will address the nation at 9 p.m. EST to make the case that his border wall is so important that he had to put one million government employees and contractors out of work.

Support for the wall is low and Americans blame Republicans for the government shutdown. Only 32 percent blame Democrats, a Reuters poll reported.

In a meeting with Democrats, the president was asked why he wouldn't open the government so that they can simply hold negotiations and build out a robust immigration bill. Trump couldn't give them a reason.

As the White House has attempted to make a case for the national emergency or "crisis" on the border, their claims haven't stacked up to fact checks. Some are illogical lies from the president like the past presidents who told him personally they support building a wall and wish they'd done it. No living president supports the wall and some said they haven't spoken to Trump since the inauguration. Trump also claimed that he's been getting tons of support and calls from Americans who support the wall. That's false because due to the shutdown, the White House switchboard is off.

The most blatant of the White House lies came this weekend when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders repeated the talking point that nearly 4,000 terrorists and people of concern were caught on the US-Mexico border. In fact, it's less than a dozen.

As of July 2017, the State Department's own reports revealed there was “no credible information that any member of a terrorist group has traveled through Mexico to gain access to the United States.”

"When it comes to land crossings, Canada has more often been the source of terrorism suspects entering the U.S., though not in great numbers," the Associated Press reported this week. "By far the majority of people who arouse concern try to enter by air."
