Watch: MAGA hat teen sidesteps questions about alleged racist remarks before Whataburger incident

The teen who had his Make America Great Again hat ripped off his hat at a Texas Whataburger gave his first public statement about the incident to Fox News on Saturday night.

The 16-year-old, Hunter Richard, was asked by Fox News host Jesse Watters whether he had spewed racist statements before the confrontation, as some witnesses have alleged. (Other allegations about racist remarks have been retracted.)

Watters asked the teen directly whether he'd said anything racist before the incident—but did not get a straight answer.

"So before he actually came over and immediately ripped my hat off my head, I don't think any of my friends or even me made eye contact with him," Richard said.

"Were you talking about anything that may have alarmed him?" Watters pushed. "Were you talking about the wall? Were you talking about, I don't know, Little Rocket Man? What were you saying?"

Richard dodged the question.

"I believe the conversation when he came over was about Pokemon, we'd seen something funny on Twitter," Richard said.

"OK, so totally unprovoked," Watters concluded.

Watters then read off the alleged attacker's rap sheet and then asked Richard if he was going to press charges. Richard said that he was going to press charges only for "theft."

Richard said that he is not going to push things further because "people make mistakes" and "I'm not really holding it against this guy."
