WATCH: Morning Joe nails stunning similarities between Mike Pence and Nixon calling for end to investigations

The producers for MSNBC's "Morning Joe" quickly reacted to Vice President Mike Pence calling on special counsel Robert Mueller to end his investigation.

The show's behind-the-scenes crew put together a supercut video of Pence's remarks and statements made by former President Richard Nixon a year into the Watergate investigation -- and the similarities were remarkable.

"Wow, why write original material when Nixon can write it for you," Scarborough said. "So Mike Pence obviously making news this morning, taking on the role of Spiro Agnew."

CNN's Jake Tapper was on the rival network promoting his new book, "The Hellfire Club," and he said the novel's 1954 setting reminded him of current politics under President Donald Trump.

"They say history doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes, and whether it is McCarthyism or the defenses that you just heard from Richard Nixon and Vice President Pence, there's a lot of rhyming. There's a lot of rhyming. You know, when it's the 'Saturday Night Massacre' versus firing James Comey. There are a lot of themes that keep playing out every few decades in this country."
