While Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough has been regularly defending Donald Trump ever since his election last week, he has expressed fear about some of Trump's top appointees so far.
On Friday, Scarborough said that Trump desperately needs to appoint someone like Mitt Romney as Secretary of State to balance out the frightening array of hotheads that will be on his staff such as chief strategist Steve Bannon, National Security Adviser pick Michael Flynn, and reported Attorney General pick Jeff Sessions.
In fact, Scarborough said that if Trump doesn't start choosing more moderate people for these key positions, the consequences would be immediate and dire.
"If you're going to get a couple loyalists that have said some crackpot things in the past, you better have some steady hands at state, at defense, and at treasury or this goes into a full blown meltdown," he said. "And listen to them or this goes into a full blown meltdown a bad as Bill Clinton's in 1993 when he took office."
New York Times reporter Nick Confessore said that Trump has been picking mostly loyalists for cabinet positions so far mostly because the Republican intelligentsia ran away from him throughout the presidential campaign.
"The party apparatus ran away from him in terms of intellectuals," he said. "The ones that stuck with him are now in line for the top jobs. Does he have confidence to bring someone like Mitt Romney? It's the big question."
