Watch MSNBC analyst John Heilemann explain why top Democrats aren’t using the T-word in final days of the campaign

MSNBC on Thursday night examined the conundrum facing Democrats while campaigning against President Donald Trump -- and why top Democrats are not even mentioning his name during the final days of the midterm elections.

Anchor Lawrence O'Donnell played a clip of Trump claiming that voters would not have "any health care" if Democrats prevailed in Tuesday's elections.

"Those are the words of a deranged man. How do you campaign against that?" he wondered.

"He lies all the time," O'Donnell continued. "That is sickness -- the man is sick. He is is deeply perverse pathological liar all the time."

"Donald Trump believes -- and has always believed -- that anyone who ever tries to tell the truth about Donald Trump is his enemy," he continued.

"How do Democrats campaign against someone who will say anything, when that someone is the President of the United States?" he wondered.

NBC News national affairs analyst John Heilemann, the host and executive producer of Showtime's "The Circus" explained how he had been traveling the country to watch the "heaviest hitters" in the Democratic Party campaign in the closing days.

Heilemann had just returned from Ohio, where he saw Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) campaign for Richard Cordray, the Democratic Party nominee for governor.

He noted, "she didn't mention Donald Trump's name once, not once did she mention it."

"That's a strategic choice," O'Donnell interjected.

"It is," he agreed. "And you noticed Oprah Winfrey didn't go after Trump today."

He also said he had been with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) for multiple campaign events, saying "over the course of those four hours the last ten minutes was when he mentioned Donald Trump."

"I have found it interesting ... that in the closing moments, the biggest guns of the Democratic Party are not talking about Donald Trump, they are talking about the things you mentioned before, the substantive issues," Heilemann noted.

"They're basically saying, 'you can't deal with this lunatic.' What you can do is -- he's a liar -- and the way to deal with that is talk about health care, talk about the environment, talk about jobs, talk about all of the topics on which Democrats are favored by the majority of Americans on the substance," he concluded.
