WATCH: Omarosa explains how Trump creates 'invisible boogeymen' to rile up his base

Donald Trump's former aide and protegée Omarosa Manigault-Newman explained to MSNBC Friday how the president creates fairytale villains to get a rise out of his base.

Host Chris Matthews pointed out that Trump has made a huge deal out of the thousands of migrants in a caravan who clashed with police at the Guatemala-Mexico border Friday.

At a rally earlier in the week, the president told the crowd — without any evidence — that the Democrats urged the migrants to "try and get to the border by Election Day" in a reiteration of his repeated false claim that undocumented immigrants illegaly vote in large numbers for Democrats.

The claim, Matthews noted, is not one anyone with any "political astuteness" would raise two weeks before an election. Manigault-Newman agreed.

"It makes no sense," she said, "not that any of his conspiracy theories have to make sense."

After spelling out the legal requirements for voting, Manigault-Newman laughingly noted that Trump doesn't "let logic get in the way" of the statements he makes to his base.

"Donald Trump wants to create this boogeyman, this tension, this [belief] that 'if we don't get out, then they're going to get us,'" she said. "Who's the 'they?' Today it's Honduras, tomorrow it's Hillary [Clinton], the next day it'll be those who oppose [Brett] Kavanaugh."

"He is really good at creating this invisible monster that's coming to get his base," Manigault-Newman added.
