WATCH: Trump 'voter fraud' commission leader says 'we may never know' if Hillary really won popular vote

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is leading President Donald Trump's "voter fraud" commission, refused to say on Wednesday whether he believed Hillary Clinton really won the popular vote.

During an interview with NBC's Katy Tur, Kobach was asked directly whether he believed Hillary Clinton received 3 million total votes more than Trump during the 2016 election.

"We'll probably never know the answer to that question," Kobach replied. "Even if you could prove a certain number were cast by ineligible voters."

Trump ordered the formation of the commission after he claimed publicly, without any supporting evidence, that Hillary Clinton only won the popular vote last year thanks to millions of "illegal" votes.

Tur reacted with surprise to Kobach's refusal to state whether Clinton won the popular vote before asking him if Trump's evidence-free claim about millions of illegal voters was the entire reason he decided to form the commission.

"That is not the reason that the commission exists," Kobach insisted. "It's not here to justify, validate or invalidate what the president said in December of January about the 2016 election."

Tur then pressed him again about whether he believed Clinton won the popular vote.

"We may never know the answer to that question," he replied.

The official count of the 2016 presidential election showed that Clinton received 65,853,516 votes, while Trump received 62,984,825 votes.
