A white woman was filmed calling police on a group of young black protesters who were holding a "Stop the Violence" rally over the weekend when they stopped at a gas station to get drinks.
The Charleston City Paper reported that according to the protest's organizer, the young "Stop the Violence" protesters were asked to wait outside after handing out anti-violence fliers at another location.
They complied, but a man and woman who pulled up in a pickup truck began calling police anyway.
"I thought she was playing at first," activist Jonathan Thrower, who also goes by the name Shakem Akhet, told the City Paper. "I didn't really think that was gonna happen."
In the audio of the 911 recording, the woman is heard telling police that "it's like a riot out here" and that although she wasn't in danger, the youthful demonstrators were "absolutely destroying the outside" of the store.
North Charleston Police responded to the call, the City Paper noted, but the crowd had already dispersed and no report was taken.
The report noted that North Charleston Police Chief Reggie Burgess has regularly attended "Stop the Violence" rallies in the region — the most recent of which was held on October 1 "in honor of a 2006 domestic violence incident that took the life of a woman and her four children."
