Watergate reporter lambastes GOP’s ‘deep state’ whining: The FBI isn’t ‘tainted’ — Trump is

Watergate's veteran reporter Carl Bernstein knows a thing or two about presidents undermining those who investigate them — and he's calling B.S. on the president's latest claim that the FBI is "tainted" by conspirators who are working against him.

"Everybody else is the issue here, not Donald Trump and his actions or those around him," Bernstein said, mocking the president's apparent mentality. 

"The key word in all of this that [President Trump] keeps using is 'tainted,'" he continued. "There's only one institution that has been tainted through these months and that is the Trump presidency. It's tainted by the president'slies, by his disrespect for American institutions operating under the law with traditional American democracy and the instruments thereof."

The president's "constant attacks" on the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller, which have been parroted by congressional Republicans and right-wing media, areundermining "confidence in the legitimate institutions of our government, which are trying to do their job." 

"If the president is as confident as he says that this investigation is going to end very soon and with him being exonerated," Bernstein concluded, "he ought to welcome all this instead of attacking constantly."
