‘We don’t tolerate roughing up prisoners’: Long Island cops hit back at Trump’s praise of police brutality

President Donald Trump on Friday told a cheering crowd of police officers that they shouldn’t be afraid to rough up suspects during arrests.

“When you see these towns and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, I said, please don’t be too nice,” Trump said during a speech at Suffolk County Community College. “Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody — don’t hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, okay?”

In response to the President's speech, the Suffolk County Police Department sent out a pair of messages on Twitter that indirectly hit back at Trump's praise for police brutality.

"The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners," the department wrote. "Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously. As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners."

In addition to the Suffolk County Police Department, the International Association of Chiefs of Police also released a statement reiterating that police officers should not use needless violence while arresting suspects.
