White House will fight any Congressional subpoena of former counsel Don McGahn

The White House will fight tooth and nail against any key aides appearing before the House, according to the Washington Post.

The latest announcement came when former White House counsel Don McGahn was subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee. His testimony to special counsel Robert Mueller proved to be a key component to his final report.

This begins another showdown between the White House and Congress as Trump works to protect himself from accountability. They're currently refusing to allow any aides to testify, two sources told The Post. The staffers will do so by asserting "executive privilege," which likely won't fly for those whose testimony didn't have to do with the president.

"McGahn was mentioned more than 150 times in Mueller’s report and provided damaging accounts to investigators about how the president pressured him to oust the special counsel and then pushed him to publicly deny the episode," The Post noted.

Getting McGahn to appear before Congress could ultimately lead to more problems for the president. McGahn isn't the president's personal lawyer, he works for the American public, so no lawyer/client privilege exists, though that hasn't stopped Trump from trying.
