White House worried about more oversight after Treasury Secretary Mnuchin 'lost his cool' with Maxine Waters

CNN's Kaitlan Collins said on Thursday that the White House was worried that, after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin 'lost his cool' with House Financial Services Chair Maxine Waters (D-CA), more oversight would be coming.

Host John King cut to footage of Mnuchin's testy exchange with Waters and cracked, "well, welcome to divided government."

"Secretary Mnuchin works hard actually to keep pretty good open channels with the Democrats. How much of that -- as he knows again the boss has a history with Maxine Waters?," he said. "What was that?"

"You're never supposed to lose your cool in a moment like that, and he certainly did," said Collins, saying that he didn't hold up as well as Bill Barr, who had been "peppered with questions" at his own hearing. "That just over timing and when he could leave that they got into such a heated debate."

"Whether or not it's wise is a question that people inside the White House are debating because, of course, she's the chairwoman who conducts oversight of the department that he leads," she continued. "So it's probably best not to get into a fight with her over timing."
