'White people are going to kill you': Georgia mosque on high alert after threat of 'mass slaughter'

The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said on Wednesday that mosques in the state are on high alert after one mosque received a series of threatening phone calls.

"White people of this country are going to kill you out of this country," said an as-yet unidentified man who left multiple voice mail messages promising a "mass slaughter" of worshippers, according to Atlanta's CBS Channel 46.

The calls began around June 22 and appear to be coming from a Missouri phone number. CAIR did not specify which mosque in particular is under threat, but said that the man has left at least eight messages so far.

This mosque has been targeted by anti-Muslim extremists in the past, CAIR said, and federal officials are investigating.

Since the election of President Donald Trump, the number of bias and hate crimes has spiked across the country.

"There doesn’t seem to be a single marginalized population that was left out of the emboldened reaction to this election," in June. "There has been a massive explosion of violence across the country, and an increase in the number of hate crimes against virtually all minority groups. The numbers are definitely going up in 2017."
