Whole Foods under fire after Gay Austin pastor sues over homophobic slur on cake

A gay pastor in Austin, Texas accused a local Whole Foods store of discrimination for adding a homophobic slur to his cake order, KXAN-TV reported.

Jordan Brown was scheduled to give a press conference on Monday following the release of a video detailing the incident.

He says in the short video that he went to the company's flagship store on April 14 and ordered a cake bearing the inscription, "Love wins." An employee complied with the request, sealing the cake with a sticker.

Brown's lawsuit stated that he caught the slur written on the cake -- which Brown intended to give to a congregation member -- after driving away from the store. The video shows the cake inside the box bearing the company's logo, and Brown also displays his receipt.

According to Brown, he called the store and spoke to a manager who was "extremely apologetic" at first, but later told him there was nothing he could do. According to the lawsuit, he was later offered a replacement cake and a gift card.

Whole Foods released a statement saying, "The team member wrote “Love Wins” at the top of the cake as requested by the guest and that’s exactly how the cake was packaged and sold at the store. Our team members do not accept or design bakery orders that include language or images that are offensive. Whole Foods Market has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination."

As Fusion reported earlier this month, the company was also sued by an employee in a New York Store, Victor King, who said he was constantly mistreated there for being a trans man.
