'Why so insecure?': Nancy Pelosi says first thing Trump ever said to her was 'I won the popular vote'

House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Sunday night that the first time she met with President Donald Trump he insisted to her that he'd won the popular vote, which he in fact lost by nearly 3 million votes.

TheHill.com said that Pelosi made the remarks during an appearance alongside MSNBC's Joy Reid at New York City's 92nd Street Y.

“Don’t tell anybody I told you this,” she joked to Reid.

“So we go to the first meeting with the president. This is historic. House and Senate Democratic and Republican leadership,” Pelosi said.

The meeting took place in the East Wing, she explained, because “he wanted to have a little hospitality, pigs in blankets, kosher meatballs. Bless him for his hospitality.”

Then, as soon as he had the group of leaders gathered, she said, the first thing he said was, "You know I won the popular vote."

"First words out of his mouth," Pelosi marveled. "‘You know I won the popular vote.’ Now I’m a very courteous person … but I thought, well he seems a little casual bout this so I’ll be a little casual too.”

So, Pelosi said, she replied, "Mr. President, that isn’t true and there’s no evidence, facts or data to support what you’re saying."

He doubled down, "Oh yeah, 3 to 5 million people voted illegally and I’m not even counting California.”

Pelosi laughed Sunday night and asked the crowd in New York, "Why so insecure?"

“I prayed for him,” she concluded, “but more importantly, I prayed for the United States of America.”

Trump has repeatedly insisted -- in spite of a complete lack of evidence -- that he only lost the popular vote due to illegal voters. He formed a Congressional commission tasked with getting to the root of the supposed election fraud. Now that commission may actually end up studying Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 election, meaning Trump's plan to prove his legitimacy as president effectively backfired.
