Conservative radio host Mike Gallagher is apologizing after a social media post about William Shatner at a memorial service drew a rebuke from the “Star Trek” legend.
Gallagher wrote on X on Saturday night that he saw “a big celebrity at a celebration of life for a mutual friend” and posted “how wonderful he looked at age 95.”
Shatner, however, was not pleased.
“It was a memorial for a friend who passed and it’s a bit classless to be reporting on it,” Shatner wrote, with an eye-roll emoji.
When an X user who had praised Shatner in reply to Gallagher’s original post apologized, Shatner clarified who he was aiming at.
“That comment wasn’t towards you, my dear,” Shatner wrote. “It was towards the supposed ‘gentleman’ who was also attending the memorial but chose to advertise I was there celebrating the life of a dear friend.”
Gallagher deleted his post and apologized.
“I feel absolutely horrible tonight,” Gallagher wrote. He said Shatner “posted that it was classless of me to post that considering the circumstance. And he blocked me. Obviously I immediately deleted my post. And all I can do is say how truly sorry I am. When I screw up, I go big. Again, I’m very, very sorry.”
His apology drew more than 140,000 views.
The next morning, Gallagher was still reflecting.
“It’s never too late to learn stuff, especially about social media,” he wrote. He then listed his “lessons”: “1) You don’t need to post everything that comes into your head; 2) Sometimes trying to right a wrong with a follow-up can make things worse; 3) I’m not really very good at this and I sure don’t do things for clicks or attention; 4) It’s never too late to delete something and move on; 5) I’m still very sorry.”
Some fellow conservatives rushed to console him. “I’m still trying to figure out what you did wrong. Don’t let X idiots get you,” wrote radio host Heidi Harris.
“I understand. It’s not really the mob that bothered me; I just didn’t mean to bother him,” Gallagher replied. “I feel like such a moron. Oh well, live and learn.”
