North Carolina teacher resigns after her shockingly racist behavior is exposed

A North Carolina teacher has resigned after being accused of shockingly racist classroom behavior.

Parents had been sharing examples of the teacher's racism on a Facebook page, but they said administrators at Winterville Charter Academy in Greenville took action after the teacher told Black students that they would be her "field slaves" if not for the Constitution, reported the Associated Press.

"The school leadership team acted immediately upon learning about a racially insensitive lesson and student remarks, and is currently working to address ongoing concerns from parents," said Colleen Cullison, a spokesperson for the school's parent company, National Heritage Academies.

Kanisha Tillman, who has an eighth-grader at the school, said another parent texted her in late September to say the teacher treated Black and white students differently.

"A white student had called a Black student a monkey," Tillman told The Associated Press, as she relayed her son's account. "When the Black student educated him on that being racist and him not liking it and not to call him that and asked the teacher for support, the teacher turned around and said to him: 'Oh, it's okay, we're all a little bit racist.'"

The teacher threatened disciplinary action, however, when the Black student called the white student a "cracker."

In another incident, some Black girls were explaining why calling another person a monkey was racist when the teacher walked up and said, "It's okay, you're all my little monkeys."

Tillman said students complained about the teacher's racism but no action was taken until she told Black students they would have been her "field slaves" if the Constitution had not ended slavery.

"I believe that the school was aware of it and they decided just to keep brushing it off," Tillman said.
