CNN's Maria Cardona lost patience with a conservative panelist's efforts to justify the detention and deportations of U.S. citizens as part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
The panelists were discussing the case of Dulce Consuelo Díaz Morales, a Baltimore mother in ICE custody whose attorney says was born in the United States, but Concerned Women for America CEO Penny Nance argued that mistaken deportations were to be expected in a massive operation she deems necessary, citing two examples of women who were slain by undocumented migrants.
"Listen, that was a very sympatheticstory, and I did feel for herparents who said there's anempty place at their dinnertable for Christmas," Nance said. "But I alsothink about Jocelyn Nungaray'sfamily, who have an empty placeforever, and also Laken Riley'sfamily, who have an empty placeforever, and the people who diedbecause of drunk drivers whoweren't supposed to be in thiscountry..."
"Hold on, let me justfinish," Nance said, fending off Democratic strategist Cardona's attempts at retort. "We need to make surewe get it right, and they needto do this. No, hold on, the overall story is the factthat 77 million people voted for Donald Trump, and they want usto close the borders and theywant to clean up the messbecause Venezuela sent incriminals into our country, andpeople that shouldn't be herewere allowed in, and we've gotto clean it up, and it's justmessy."
Cardona finally got a chance to say her piece.
"Penny, you know I loveyou and we have been friends forquite a while, but what you'resaying has absolutely nothing todo with this," Cardona said. "This woman is aU.S. citizen, she was born here.If that's true. Hang on, hangon, this makes – her lawyer wasshowing her birth certificate. What else do they need for thisto be true?"
This makes myblood boil, and it makeseveryone's blood run cold whoare not just U.S. citizens," Cardona added. "I ama naturalized citizen – thisterrifies me."
