A Democratic legislative candidate from Virginia revealed that she and her husband are swingers.
Yvonne Rorrer, who's running for the House of Delegates in a deep-red district along the North Carolina border, posted on X over the weekend that she didn't want her lifestyle arrangement to be used against her, so she explained that she and her husband of 22 years "are ethically non-monogamous," reported The Daily Beast.
"In politics, people love to dig up the unexpected and spin it into a spectacle," Rorrer posted. "If you dare to step outside the box, they’ll try to use it to discredit you, distract from the real issues, or divide the public. I'm different. I don’t do shame, and I sure won’t let anyone else tell my story."
Rorrer and her husband have practiced ethical nonmonogamy for about two and a half years, she told HuffPost, but have not been intimate with another couple for about six months.
“This is not something that we have hidden from our adult children, our closest friends, the majority of our family members,” she posted on X. “This has been our way of life for several years, and so it would have come out. And if it was going to come out, I would rather it be for me and in my own words.”
Rorrer said her own father wasn't bothered by the revelation, but she said her in-laws are almost as upset to learn they were swingers as they were when they found out she was running for the delegate seat as a Democrat.
The political newcomer worked in property management for 20 years until the Covid-19 pandemic, and since then she's been a volunteer representative for child abuse victims in the court system, and she decided to challenge Republican delegate Wren Williams after he voted against a bill blocking parental rights for convicted rapists.
“That’s what did it for me,” Rorrer said. “I have no political background, but I have a mouth and I have an opinion, and that did it. That pretty much did it for me.”
She recognized the challenge of running as a Democrat in a district that's 90 percent white and backed Donald Trump with more than 76 percent of the vote, although she joked her revelation may serve as an asset.
“I will have to now probably rely on all the swingers in the country to fund my campaign," Rorrer said.
