Hardline Senate Republicans are trying to throw a wrench into their party's plans after a bruising night at the polls.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is collecting signatures for a letter urging GOP leaders to call a conference meeting before Senate Republicans hold their closed-door leadership election, which is still expected to happen as planned on Tuesday, Politico reported Thursday.

Johnson made the case for slowing things down during an appearance on The Clay & Buck Show, arguing his colleagues should first take stock of where things went wrong....

A bill that President Donald Trump has been pushing hard to get passed before the midterm elections is "effectively dead," according to multiple reports.

Bloomberg reporter Steven Dennis wrote on X Saturday that the SAVE America Act "isn't going to pass before the August recess. It's effectively dead for the midterm elections."

The SAVE America Act would require states to look for noncitizen voters and force voters to confirm U.S. citizenship when participating in elections, mainly through a valid passport or birth certificate. It also pushes voter ID at polls....

An ousted White House official is considering a campaign against a defiant GOP Senator to return to Trump's orbit, per a new report.

According to a New York Post exclusive, former advisor Corey Lewandowski is plotting to court President Donald Trump with a campaign that would pit rumored lover and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem against Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).

Thune has reportedly been a headache for Trump because of the stalled SAVE America Act, a proof-of-citizenship voting bill. Thune's seat will be up for election in 2028, when Trump will be out of the White House, but Lewandowski is reportedly plotting to return from "political exile" by pushing Noem for the Senate seat, The Post wrote. Thune told reporters earlier this week that his "assumption" is that he plans to run for re-election....

President Donald Trump is downplaying his frustrations with a key Republican senator, according to a recent report.

Despite a recent public spat, Trump has privately said that Senate Majority Leader John Thune is giving him more trouble than he's let on, wrote Jonathan Lemire in a Tuesday piece for The Atlantic.

A senior adviser told Lemire that Trump considers Thune "one of my biggest headaches." ...

Republicans are responding with exasperation and dismay to President Donald Trump's shot at one of their party leaders, per reports.

Politico reported that GOP senators are standing up to Trump's recent comments, taking issue with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and his inability to pass the SAVE America Act, a proof-of-citizenship voting bill touted by Trump.

At a rally in Georgia on Wednesday, Trump told attendees to "call John Thune" while complaining that "the Senate is a place you send things when you want them to die," and "We're not going to take this any longer. We're not going to take it. I'm trying to be nice," according to Politico. ...

A Trump biographer suggested that Trump is sabotaging his own party ahead of the midterms for a selfish reason.

On an episode of The Daily Beast Podcast, Michael Wolff said that he believes Trump's strategy is to lay the groundwork for the Republicans to take the blame for losing the midterms, and his goal is to prove that the party needs him.

"You can actually kind of get inside his head, and that's what he's doing. He is now undermining the Republicans," Wolff said, adding that it's to "blame it on them, to reinforce the fact that they can't do anything if he's not running."...
