Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville thinks a Trump-allied governor's day of reckoning is closer than many expect after a stunning election move.

On Friday's episode of "Politics War Room," Carville and co-host Al Hunt fielded a listener question about Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican who suspended the state's congressional primaries after the Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. Asked whether Landry would ever be held accountable, Carville, a Louisiana native, said he was "beginning to think it might be sooner than most people think."

The question came from a listener in Prairieville, Louisiana, who said Landry declared a state of emergency, stopped the primary while voting was underway and then redrew the congressional map again....

Democratic political strategist James Carville said that now is the time for Democrats to launch an "aggressive party-switching operation" that could crack the solidly Republican South.

"I'm calling for a new Democratic Southern strategy," Carville said on the latest episode of his Politicon podcast. "Southern Democrats, particularly in places like Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, probably Texas, should go after party switchers."

Carville said the latest polling numbers he had seen estimate that between 15 and 20 percent of Republicans oppose Trump, and about 95 percent of Democrats do....

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paused Iran war duties on Monday to take on President Donald Trump's Republican foe, according to reports.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who has served seven terms in the House of Representatives for Kentucky, has been a frequent critic of Trump. And now, Hegseth has made a rare move to try to influence the upcoming race for the Bluegrass State's primary on Tuesday, reported The Swamp, a Substack from The Daily Beast.

"Lest we forget, there is a war on," The Swamp reported. "That won’t stop the Defense Secretary (who likes to insist he is the War Secretary even though a legal change of title requires a congressional vote) from taking time out from serving his country to help his boss settle his petty grievances."...

A Donald Trump-backed candidate for a critical Senate seat in Louisiana will advance to the runoffs, after Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) failed to hold onto his seat or even claw enough votes to gain second place.

Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA) was leading with more than 40 percent of the vote late on Saturday, according to live reporting by CNN. Behind her, Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming advanced with just under 30 percent of the vote, according to AP as it called the race in his favor.

Cassidy struggled to reel in more than a quarter of the votes, and he was eliminated from the runoff with just over 24 percent of the vote. The GOP incumbent was facing the ire of Trump for voting to convict him during his second impeachment over the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol....

Conservative Supreme Court justices wrote a scathing dissent to the 7-2 decision to allow women to continue accessing the abortion pill Mifepristone via mail and telehealth.

"What is at stake is the perpetration of a scheme to undermine our decision in Dobbs v. Jackson," Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his dissent, referring to the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and pulled back abortion access.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court continued a pause on an appeals court decision that restricted access to Mifepristone via telehealth and mail. The decision extended a stay that the bench handed down earlier in the month, but it is not the final decision, as it will go back to the New Orleans-based appeals court and could return to the Supreme Court docket, reported The Hill. ...

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed women to continue accessing the abortion pill Mifepristone through telehealth visits, blocking a lower court ruling that would have required in-person visits while litigation continues.

CNN reported that the conservative court maintained its stay of a May 1 Fifth Circuit decision that "abruptly required women to obtain the drug through in-person visits." Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from the decision. The court did not explain its reasoning or disclose the full vote count.

The decision preserves the status quo while officials in Louisiana continue to push for limiting the availability of the drug in lower courts, CNN reported, adding that "the focus will now return to the New Orleans-based appeals court, which will decide the merits of Louisiana's challenge."...
