SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Gay marriage supporters asked a federal appeals court on Wednesday to allow an order lifting California's gay marriage ban to take effect right away, according to a court filing.

Last year a U.S. District judge found California's gay marriage ban, otherwise known as Proposition 8, unconstitutional.

That judge ordered Proposition 8 lifted, but an appeals court stayed that decision pending appeal.

On Wednesday gay marriage proponents asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to lift the stay, due to recent rulings that could delay an ultimate resolution to the case.
