Despite concern about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's cool language that the United States would "support" international military action against Libya, the U.S. launched its first missiles in Libya just after 3:30 p.m. EST Saturday, according to CNN, which cites Pentagon officials. The missiles landed near Tripoli and Misrata, in the western part of the country.

The missiles are being launched from one of the six U.S. ships in the Mediterranean, and are the first U.S. military action of Operation Odyssey Dawn.

French fighter jets fired on four pro-Gaddafi Libyan tanks earlier this afternoon.

Both President Barack Obama and Clinton have said that the U.S. will not deploy ground troops in Libya.
