Self-described 'Senator-elect' Rick Scott will travel to DC for orientation and leadership votes this week

Florida Gov. Rick Scott's Senate campaign said that the Republican candidate would travel to Washington, D.C. this week to participate in orientation for new senators prior to his election being certified.

The campaign told NBC's Ali Vitali that the self-described "senator-elect" would likely make the trip as a recount gets underway in the Florida Senate race.

According to the campaign, Scott will "participate in some new-member orientation activities, including the photo, and will be voting in leadership elections."

Scott is locked in a tight election battle with incumbent Sen. Ben Nelson (D), who was trailing by 0.15 percent on Sunday. Scott's lead had steadily dwindled since Election Day as votes continue to be counted.

On Monday, Broward Circuit Judge Jack Tuter rejected Scott's bid to impound voting machines in the county.
