Colorado Supreme Court smacks down Trump's last-ditch bid to stop insurrection trial

The Supreme Court of Colorado has rejected an 11th-hour bid by former President Donald Trump to throw out a case that could get him disqualified from the ballot in that state — and prove a test case for constitutional activists in other states.

Lawfare's Roger Parloff flagged the decision on Friday evening.

Kari Lake will not sever ties with antisemites and white nationalists as she works to claim a seat in the U.S. Senate, an Arizona columnist warned state voters this week.

"Make no mistake," wrote E.J. Montini. "While they’ll make every effort not to appear like a white nationalist or an antisemite, they’ll actively be courting the votes of individuals who are."

Here's why Trump should be worried about this possible GOP challenger

He's saying he's not running for president but if he did he is growing a large war chest that rivals Donald Trump's.

DeSantis calls for institutionalizing more people in wake of Maine mass shootings

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that he would not support a national red flag law if elected president and called for more people experiencing mental health struggles to be involuntarily committed to a treatment facility. DeSantis’ remarks in an interview Thursday on CNN came just a day after mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, that left 18 dead and set off an ongoing manhunt for the suspected killer. The suspect in the shootings had reportedly experienced mental health issues in the past and was institutionalized for two weeks over the summer. In Florida, law enforcement agencies can ask judges...

Trump once again implies terrorist group is 'smart' despite flood of criticism

Former President Donald Trump triggered outrage and controversy at a recent campaign event by characterizing Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militants designated as a terrorist group for their violent attacks on Israel, as "very smart."

Trump is 'preparing the ground for a self-pardon' if reelected: Analyst

Donald Trump's actions as his financial fraud trial continues in Manhattan appear to be serving as a test-run for his future trials with the intention of creating a rationale for a self-pardon should he be returned to the Oval Office in 2024.

According to the New Yorker's John Cassidy, there are lessons to be learned from how Trump has conducted himself inside and outside Judge Arthur Engoron's courtroom where New York Attorney General Letitia James is pursuing her $250 million lawsuit.

Beyond the fact that the "incorrigible" former president is using the media attention to get himself in front of the cameras, Cassidy is suggesting that Trump is trying to set the stage for violence should he be on the losing end on this and his other upcoming trials.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

As he writes, Trump is showing up at a trial that he doesn't need to attend and is making inflammatory statements to the press hoping to drown out the testimony that is not going his way.

Add to that, the former president is working overtime trying to rally his MAGA base.

As Cassidy puts it, "As he confronts his accusers, Trump’s legal tactics are secondary to his political strategy of discrediting the court and the prosecution in the eyes of his supporters. Only he knows his ultimate goals. But they seem to include raising doubts in advance about any guilty verdicts and planting the idea that such verdicts would be so outrageous that they would lead to unrest and violence."

"Almost certainly, he’s also trying to prepare the ground for a self-pardon in the event of a conviction on the federal charges against him if he gets reelected," he adds.
