2026 Midterm Elections

Republicans made a 'tacit admission' about midterms — and it could blow up in their face

A conservative columnist warned on Monday that her Republican colleagues just made a "tacit admission" about the 2026 midterms that could blow up in their face.

S.E. Cupp, a columnist for CNN, said during a segment on "The Source" with host Kaitlan Collins that Republicans have all but admitted that they don't stand a chance during the midterms with their push for mid-cycle redistricting. While those efforts seem to have paid off so far, Cupp warned that they could energize the Democratic base in a way that thwarts all the time Republicans spent trying to rig the election in their favor.

John Cornyn walks back opposition to key policy after Trump sides with his Dem opponent

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) originally slammed a proposal by his Democratic challenger, Presbyterian seminarian and state legislator James Talarico, to lift the federal gas tax in response to Iran-driven fuel inflation, claiming it was "short-sighted," unsustainable, and would blow a hole in the federal budget.

But now President Donald Trump has endorsed that idea himself — leaving Cornyn, who is still an underdog for renomination in the runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and desperate for a Trump endorsement, in an awkward spot.

'The hood is off': Internet explodes over GOP lawmaker's 'brazenly racist' interview

Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), already one of the GOP's most vulnerable incumbents even after state courts struck down efforts to redraw her district to favor Democrats, landed in hot water on Monday after a clip went viral of her agreeing with a right-wing talk radio host telling Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to "get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia" — a common colloquial phrase, but one with a deeply charged double meaning given that Jeffries is Black.

The moment immediately brought her under fire on social media, including from some fellow members of Congress.

Dems appeal to Supreme Court to halt 'irreparable harm' of Virginia redistricting battle

Virginia Democrats on Monday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to revive the voter-approved redistricting amendment struck down last week by the Supreme Court of Virginia, escalating the fight over the state’s congressional map to the nation’s highest court with the 2026 midterms inching closer.

In an emergency application filed with Chief Justice John Roberts, attorneys representing House Speaker Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, and the commonwealth of Virginia asked the court to pause the state ruling while the appeal moves forward.

RFK Jr. quietly resurrects anti-vaccine push despite White House muzzle: NYT

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dialed back his public comments around vaccines, but behind-the-scenes, something else is underway, according to a New York Times report published on Monday.

Kennedy had a direct order to curb his critiques of vaccines and his suggestion — despite a lack of scientific evidence — that chronic disease was tied to vaccines. The Trump administration was apparently concerned that the cabinet member's talk around the topic could impact Republicans' chances of maintaining control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

Data guru flags 'good news for Democrats' despite redistricting losses

Democratic chances for taking back the House majority took a major hit in recent weeks, but CNN's Harry Enten found reasons for optimism.

The U.S. Supreme Court ushered in a new era of gerrymandering last month by ruling that it was illegal for Louisiana legislators to create a new majority-Black Congressional district, and Virginia's Supreme Court last week struck down a voter-approved redistricting measure that likely would have favored Democrats, but Enten told "CNN News Central" that all was not lost for the party.

Republicans have handed Democrats a "major campaign gift" ahead of the midterm elections, a columnist said on Monday.

The Guardian's Sidney Blumenthal, former senior adviser to President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, discussed how GOP lawmakers "would rather self-destruct than attempt to rescue themselves." And in doing so, Democrats have made gains with voters that could pay off in the fall.

Vulnerable Republicans nervous as they near 'toxic' vote found to be on 'thin ice': report

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) taunted congressional Republicans Monday morning over a key vote slated for next week, one that he argued was making “vulnerable” GOP lawmakers increasingly “nervous” over the potential fallout from voters.

That vote is on Republicans’ $72 billion spending package, which includes a $1 billion ask for security related to President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project, an ask that has made a growing number of GOP lawmakers uneasy.

Senator issues blistering warning over new GOP plan: 'Careful what you pray for'

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) issued President Donald Trump a blistering warning Sunday over the GOP’s new gerrymandering blitz, cautioning the president that his push for Republican-led states to redraw their congressional district maps could come back to haunt them, and as soon as this November.

The conservative-leaning Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling last week that effectively gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a provision designed to prohibit racially discriminatory voting policies – namely, the drawing of congressional districts in such a manner as to dilute the voting power of historically marginalized groups.
