Wisconsin Republican Party chief Brian Schimming was confronted by CNN's Kate Bolduan on Monday over why the GOP in his state is sending people who took part in the fake elector scheme as delegates to the national convention — and he was quick to defend them as "good Republicans" who didn't believe anything they were doing was against the law.

This defense, occurring amid the backdrop of several fake electors around the country being charged with crimes, comes as the Republican National Convention is set to begin this week, shaken up by the weekend assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

'Let's be real here': CNN analyst reminds colleagues of Trump's vicious attacks on Biden

During a Sunday afternoon CNN panel on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, analyst Phil Mattingly admonished his colleagues for focusing solely on what rhetoric may have led the shooter to target the former president, pointing out that violent rhetoric is common at Trump's rallies.

Speaking with host Manu Raju, Mattingly cut right to the chase.

"The number of people I heard from last night, people who aren't diehard Trump supporters who have had just a visceral response to this and their belief that this was driven by things that have occurred, that Democrats have said or Democrats have acted upon over the course of the last year, it's very real whether or not you believe the evidence behind it, " he began.

"The other thing I would say here is look, every speech of Donald Trump gives, he talks about if Joe Biden wins, the country dies. If Joe Biden wins, everything is over — the Constitution falls apart," he continued. "So let's be real here: this isn't because Joe Biden says Donald Trump is an existential threat."

"Both sides are saying the exact same thing here, so let's be a little self-aware about what we're talking about here," he cautioned.

Ron Johnson links critical race theory to Trump shooting during CNN interview

During an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper the morning after there was an attempt on Donald Trump's life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) called for a lowering of temperatures on both sides of the political divide before attempting to explain what may have motivated the shooter.

During that attempt, he singled out critical race theory, long a feature of GOP lawmakers attempting to rile up their base.

"One thing that I have found upsetting," host Tapper promoted, "If I can editorialize for one second, is the degree to which so many Americans claim to love their country but hate their fellow Americans and I'm not talking about Republicans or Democrats."

"I'm just — I see it everywhere, everywhere and I'm wondering if that's something that concerns you too?" he asked.

"It does, that's why I said the greatest threat to our nation right now is we're horribly divided," Johnson replied. "But again, in general, we share the same goals, so why are we so divided?"

"Well, there are political figures, their political groups. I would argue that's what identity politics is about, that's what critical race theory is about, so there are people who are purposely trying to divide us for political advantage," he claimed. "Resist it, don't let them get away with it. And, again, start talking to each other. That's part of the problem with social media today as we've lost a sense of community."
