10-year-old hangs herself after confronting bully — as other kids mocked her on social media

A 10-year-old Colorado girl took her own life following a bullying incident caught on video.

Ashawnty Davis was a fifth-grader at Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora, where she loved playing basketball and hoped to play one day in the WNBA, reported KDVR-TV.

Her parents said something changed in Ashawnty toward the end of last month, when she was involved in a fight on school property, after classes were over.

Another student recorded the incident on a cell phone and uploaded the video to the app Musical.ly.

The video shows Ashawnty and another girl fighting as a group of students stand by and watch.

Ashawnty's mother said her daughter had confronted the other girl, who she said had been bullying her.

She said her daughter was humiliated when the video was shared online and passed around to other students, and she said the bullying got worse.

“My daughter came home two weeks later and hanged herself in the closet,” said her mother, Latoshia Harris.

The girl spent nearly two weeks on life support, but she died Wednesday morning.

“It’s just devastating,” said her father, Anthony Davis. "She was just a child of joy and she brought joy to everyone."

The Cherry Creek School District issued a statement calling Ashawnty's death "a heartbreaking loss," and said officials learned of the video from reporters.

"We took immediate action in response, turning the video over to police and addressing the matter with students," the district said in a statement. "It should also be noted that the video did not take place during school hours.”

Ashawnty's mother and father asked other parents to teach their children not to bully.

“I want other parents to know that it’s happening,” Harris said. “That was my baby and I love my baby, and I just want mothers to listen.”
