A more animated Jon Stewart -- literally -- could be on HBO in time for the election

Jon Stewart's appearance on Stephen Colbert's Late Show last month may be just the beginning of his election commentary this year, Variety reported.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed over the weekend that Stewart is "establishing an animation studio," and could begin releasing material in September or October.

"The idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network with an Onion-like portal," Bloys said during an event hosted by the Television Critics Association, adding that the studio would allow Stewart "to comment in real time with what's happening during the day's news events."

Stewart signed on with HBO last November, about three months after retiring from hosting The Daily Show.

Bloys said that Stewart's new material would be released through the network's digital platforms, but would also likely include a 30-minute program aired on traditional television.

Last month, Stewart joined former Daily Show correspondent Colbert to deliver a blistering critique of not only Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention, but Fox News' Sean Hannity.

"Here's where we are: Either [Hannity] and his friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christians readers of prompters being president, or they don't care — as long as it’s their skin-skinned, prompter, authoritarian, tyrant, narcissist," Stewart said at the time.
