'Batman — except useless': Andrew Cuomo's 'cringey' jumper cable stunt backfires

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) announced that he would not drop out of the New York City mayoral race this week. On Tuesday, however, he dropped a new video on Threads with no commentary, showing him jumping a man's car.

Cuomo is shown with a young man of color whose car appears to have broken down. Cuomo attaches jumper cables to the car, and the driver tries to start it. Cuomo hands him the cables, they exchange a near-finger-snap dap handshake, and the two go about their business.

But one observer noticed he did it wrong, attaching the black cable first and then the red cable. As one how-to video from ChrisFix explains, the red cable goes on first. In Cuomo's video, he attaches the red clamp second. It was enough for someone on X to submit a safety note in the "community notes" to clarify for safety reasons, how to properly attach the cables.

Democratic strategist Mike Nellis commented, "Andrew Cuomo just posted the cringiest manufactured video of him helping someone jumpstart their car. I'm not even going to waste your time sharing it, but it's so transparently bad. This guy is going to get killed in the general election. He still doesn’t understand why he lost the primary."

Lindsey Boylan, who made sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo, noted, "Reminds me of the times he would have the state troopers on his detail not help people stranded so he could do it on camera and take credit. Multiple times over years."

Huffington Post senior reporter Sebastian Murdock also made the same point.

"What a crazy coincidence that cameras were once again rolling as Cuomo helped a motorist. And it's happened so many times!" he wrote on X with a few screen captures of a story about Cuomo trying to aid stranded motorists.

WNYC/Gothamist reporter Jon Campbell concurred. "The latest in a years-long string of his people putting out 'Andrew Cuomo helping people with their car/truck' videos."

Fact-checker Kellen Becoats noted he was "watching Cuomo screwing up the dap on repeat."

Professor Jon Becker quipped, "Imagine a NYC voter who was undecided but then saw a video of Andrew Cuomo using jumper cables and deciding that they'll vote for him now."

Author and filmmaker Matt Zoller Seitz said, "Basically, he's Batman, except completely useless."

Another individual, with pro-Donald Trump leanings, referenced Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), who posted a few videos that went viral, helping folks with simple car issues. "OMG Andrew Cuomo hired Tim Walz as his campaign manager....."

Southmayd Professor ‪Scott Shapiro‬ called it "Legit funniest thing I’ve ever seen." A follower replied, "I can jump your wife AND your car."
