Ann Coulter mocked for trusting 'conman' Trump: 'Like marrying the person you cheated with'

Conservative writer Matt Lewis mocked Ann Coulter and other Republicans for getting suckered by President Donald Trump.

The Daily Beast columnist ridiculed Coulter for trusting a president she had once praised as a "lying conman," saying Trump had finally pulled one over on her by promising to build a border wall for which he was unable to win legislative support.

"Putting your faith in a man based on his ability to fool other people is like marrying the person you cheated with," Lewis said. "Eventually, that person gets around to lying to ... you."

Lewis said the conservative firebrand had learned the hard way that "alleged dealmaker" Trump can't negotiate deals as president because he had no credibility.

"For many conservatives (like Ann Coulter), Trump’s credibility rested not on his character, but on the fact that he said he would build a wall," Lewis said. "They never stopped to think that the guy who conned others might be conning them, too. Today, Coulter is paying a high price for her misplaced trust — and she is discovering what so many of us sensed all along."

That credibility deficiency would most likely hurt Trump's chances for re-election, Lewis said, but he feared the president's untrustworthiness would hurt the nation in other ways.

"What if Trump needs to deliver an important message about an actual emergency (not a contrived one)," he said. "Not every political leader needs soaring rhetoric. However, all leaders must husband credibility as capital to be called upon when needed. Trump has squandered his."

"Donald Trump’s rhetoric doesn’t work because he lacks credibility, and he lacks credibility because he has squandered it on lies and hate tweets," he added.
