A Republican state senator dodged a speeding ticket after blasting through a 65MPH zone at 89MPH — because he has “legislative immunity.”
Arizona Sen. Jake Hoffman was pulled over in January — but the trooper declined to issue a ticket because of his position, reported ABC 15 Arizona.
"The Trooper recognized and verified that Mr. Hoffman is an Arizona State Senator, and currently in legislative session," a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
Though he didn’t invoke immunity, Hoffman did confirm his position with the cop, a spokesman for the senator told ABC 15.
Immunity is a controversial issue in Arizona, with lawmakers even being issued stickers to put on their licenses to show cops.
“I tore it off," said State Representative Quang Nguyen, who is fighting to end immunity.
"We need to show the people we are making laws for everyone, including us.”
The episode left others furious.
Resident Debbie Logan to ABC 15, “I attend several meetings, and I always allow myself enough time to get there.”
