Baton Rouge officer wondered 'if this city loves me' after Dallas shooting attack

A Facebook post attributed to one of the police officers killed in a shooting attack on Sunday showed concern on his part and what he described as physical and emotional fatigue, the New York Times reported.

"I swear to God I love this city, but I wonder if this city loves me," Montrell Jackson wrote in a post dated July 8, the day after five officers in Dallas were killed and nine others were injured in a separate ambush. "In uniform, I get nasty hateful looks, and out of uniform some consider me a threat. I’ve experienced so much in my short life and these last 3 days have tested me to the core."

Jackson urged his friends on the account not to succumb to hate.

"This city MUST and WILL get better," he wrote. "I'm working in these streets so any protesters, officers, friends, family or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer. I got you."

While the post -- as well as a picture showing the 10-year department veteran with his infant son -- circulated online in the wake of Jackson's death, neither appears in a Facebook page titled "Remembering Montrell Jackson."

One of Jackson's friends, Darnell Murdock, told the Baton Rouge Advocate that he served on the force to "make you have a better day."

"He was humble, kind and sweet," said Murdock. "He wasn't on there to write tickets. I don't understand how this could happen to someone like him."

However, comments on the page regarding the child match those quoted in a Reuters report about Jackson and the other officers who were killed or injured in the attack.

The suspected gunman, 29-year-old Gavin Eugene Long, was shot and killed by police.
