Trump biographer reveals how the president might have committed fraud on his taxes

On Wednesday, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal sent a formal request to the IRS targeting six years of President Donald Trump's tax returns.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump mocked the Democrats for asking for six years instead of ten years while talking to reporters, but researcher and biographer Michael D'Antonio said that the tax returns could reveal that the president might have committed fraud.

"How significant could this be?" CNN's Anderson Cooper asked.

"The six years is interesting because that's usually the statute of limitation for fraud committed on your taxes," D'Antonio said. "So I think this is a very well-targeted request."

D'Antonio added, "The president faces peril in multiple areas here. He faces the prospect of being shown to not have made charitable contribution, to not be worth what he says he's worth. To not have the income he's claimed to have."

"There are so many areas where he could have committed fraud. He's claimed one value for properties for tax purposes and other values for the purpose of seeking loans. So bank fraud is a much more serious crime than tax fraud. So he's in big trouble here," he said.
